Nutrition Therapy
Our dieticians with you to address the emotional, psychological, and behavioral factors that may contribute to disordered eating patterns, while developing healthier eating habits.
Many people seek therapy to help with nutrition issues.
At Abri Psychotherapy, we’re dedicated to supporting your journey toward healthier eating habits and overall well-being through personalized nutrition therapy. Our one-on-one sessions provide a safe, confidential space where you can explore your relationship with food and nutrition without fear of judgment. Nutrition therapy offers the opportunity to understand your unique dietary needs, develop sustainable and balanced eating habits, and work toward a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle. With a tailored approach, we work together to help you build resilience, foster self-acceptance, and regain control over your nutritional health and well-being. Nutrition therapy can help with:
Understanding the Root Causes
Explore the emotional, psychological, and behavioral factors contributing to disordered eating patterns.
Improving Body Image
Address body dissatisfaction and develop a more positive, accepting view of your body.
Developing a Healthy Relationship with Food
Learn how to shift from harmful eating behaviors to balanced, mindful eating habits.
Building Coping Strategies
Equip yourself with strategies to manage stress, emotions, and triggers without resorting to unhealthy eating behaviors.
If you’ve never worked with a dietitian before, it can feel intimidating to begin. Our goal as Registered Dietitians is to help individuals find an approach to eating that works for you and supports your health and/or recovery goals. Typically, this work involves some exploration, trial and error, experimenting with different approaches, education, and hopefully some laughter along the way. We may use various strategies or skills, including RO DBT if you’re involved with classes or individual therapy at Abri, or other modalities if that feels more comfortable.
We have 25+ years of experience working in the field of nutrition and eating disorders, as well as disordered eating. If you have a diagnosed eating disorder, we require that you are working with a therapist who has expertise in this field while working with us. In some cases, we can assist in helping you find a therapist if you are in need of one. It is also important that you have a medical provider who is aware of your eating issues and ideally, who will also communicate with your treatment team.
Our approach is client-centered, Health at Every Size, and non-diet focused. We tend to be pretty direct, yet kind and understanding, approaching all of our clients as whole individuals. We work with clients of all genders and see adults and older adolescents (age 15+). If you have weight concerns, we’re happy to discuss these with you and explain why it is harmful and nonproductive to focus on weight loss. Instead, we work on healing your relationship with food, developing structure around eating, and integrating food into your social life, along with any other goals that are relevant to you. If you are underweight, it will be part of our work to normalize your nutrition and help you achieve a weight where your body is physically stable and your mental health is optimal or improved. This process may move at different paces depending on your readiness and motivation, but you must be medically stable to engage in outpatient treatment.
We accept insurances including PacificSource, OHP/Healthshare, Kaiser (must be preauthorized to see us specifically), Out of Network benefits (Regence/BCBS and sometimes others), and private pay.
Nutrition Therapy for Teens (age 15+)
We work with more mature teens who are ready to take ownership of their recovery process. This means you’ll be talking openly with your therapist and dietitian about your thoughts and challenges, as well as including support people in your recovery process (or being open to doing so). We include parents in the first meeting, and together we’ll decide how much involvement makes sense going forward. It is very difficult to determine how long treatment will be needed before our first or second session, but this can be discussed once we’ve had an opportunity to meet.
All communication with parents will take place during appointments unless other agreements are discussed.
