Get started at our clinic in Portland, Oregon

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of psychotherapy that helps us process difficult emotions.

At Abri Psychotherapy, we’re dedicated to helping you live a more fulfilling life through personalized Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Our one-on-one sessions provide a safe, confidential space where you can explore difficult thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. ACT offers the opportunity to accept and embrace your emotional experiences while focusing on taking value-driven actions that align with your goals. With a mindfulness-based, evidence-backed approach, we work together to help you build psychological flexibility, reduce avoidance, and improve your overall well-being. ACT can help with:

Reducing Avoidance

Encourages individuals to face and accept difficult emotions, reducing the tendency to avoid uncomfortable situations.

Improving Emotional Regulation

Teaches people to observe and accept their emotions without letting them dictate behavior, promoting better emotional balance.

Managing Anxiety and Depression

Helps individuals accept anxious or depressive thoughts while focusing on value-driven actions instead of rumination.

Increasing Psychological Flexibility

Empowers individuals to adapt to challenging situations by focusing on their values and taking meaningful actions, despite discomfort.

What is ACT?

ACT is grounded in mindfulness and behavioral therapy principles, aiming to help individuals live a meaningful life aligned with their values, despite experiencing difficult emotions or thoughts. ACT focuses on six core processes:

Acceptance – Instead of trying to avoid or suppress negative thoughts or emotions, ACT encourages people to acknowledge and accept them as a part of their experience.

Being Present – ACT promotes mindfulness, encouraging individuals to stay fully aware and engaged in the present moment rather than being preoccupied with the past or future.

Values Clarification – ACT encourages individuals to identify their core values—the things that are most important to them—and to use those values as a guide for behavior.

Cognitive Defusion – This process involves distancing oneself from unhelpful thoughts, seeing them for what they are (just thoughts), and not letting them dictate behavior.

Self as Context – This concept helps people recognize that they are more than their thoughts or emotions, allowing them to view experiences from a broader perspective.

Committed Action – Once values are clarified, ACT encourages taking concrete steps toward living in alignment with those values, even in the face of challenges or discomfort.
